II. Alpe Adria Route, the first

Captain’s Log: Sunday, 16 July 2017

Distance: Villach – Roveredo/Ovedasso, 84km

After a slightly cold night on a camping ground close to Villach, we started driving south towards Italy.

In the morning we had a visit of some little cute birds.

The route was easy to find, since it is a popular bicycle route the signs are quite obvious. The sun was shining, even though it was not too hot to drive, and until we arrived the border to Italy, the way was very easy, neither steep uphill or downhill.

But afterwards I had to push my bicycle up again. Moritz has a bit less luggage with him, so he was able to drive up. Well, I’m already used to pushing, so it wasn’t really a problem.

Afterwards we got on the old railway route, which was transformed into the bicycle street. It was funny because from time to time we were able to see the old stations, now taken over by nature again.

After Tarvis, a little town somewhere after the border, there came a point, from which the road went slightly downhill. Before that, it has been always slightly uphill.

We had to get through some old railway tunnels as well.

It was a nice and smooth road till Pontebba, and from there another 20 kilometres as well. And some point we had to look for an accommodation, which we found somewhere on the way. There are literally no bigger towns close by. We had to get down from the bicycle route and drive/push up a small mountain street. But the B&B we found there was worth it in my opinion.

A nice eldery couple runs it, the only problem is that especially the wife is very talkative, which would not be a problem, but she only speaks Italian, and a few words of English. The husband speaks that much English that we are able to communicate.

In the evening we even got a warm meal with three other bicyclers from Linz, who are doing the complete Alpe Adria Route from Salzburg to Trieste.
