Captain’s Log: Sunday, 13 August

Distance: Absolutely none, like, literally, except for the couple of metres around the camping ground and the crater

Except for a short night walk at the crater with two other campers from Britain, there did not happen much today. I used the day to relax, and I basically spent the whole day at the Café from the camping ground, reading and writing again. The waiter, who even spoke basic German and French, brought me a glass of water with ice from time to time, without me asking for it, which was really nice. I then got an ice cream and later on something proper to eat there, before I left in the late afternoon again, just to get to my tent and continuing reading there.

When the sun set, I had to sit outside of my tent under the street lamp for reading. That was when the two British guys, who had their tents right beside me, asked me to join on their walk on the crater. Since I had nothing else to do and since I had no proper conversation since Rome  I joined them.

I have to admit, it had a special flair to stand in the middle of a vulcano crater, the stars above us and the smell of sulphur everywhere. That is nothing you see often.

Later, back where oue tents were, we had a discussion about various conspiracy theories. One of them is completely sure that the moon landing was fake and that the whole thing with the universe is not the way we think it is. I mean, everyone is allowed to believe what they want, and it has been interesting to listen to this point of view as well, but it is strange nevertheless.

I still do not know if I should ride down to Pompeii with my bike tomorrow and stay dow  there for two nights, or if I should just stay here and maybe join these two tomorrow on their teip to the Vesuvius, and the day after tomorrow on their trip to Pompeii. Well, I still have time to decide that.

By the way, the fire was still smoking from some small spots.

And the whole hill area behind the camping ground looked quite burned.
