Captain’s Log: Tuesday, 1 August
Distance: Florence – San Gimignano, 63km
We started around 15 minutes before 8 today, since we both agreed that it would be more intelligent to use the coolness in the morning, so that we do not have to drive in the afternoon heat again, especially in the moment.
I have to admit, it is really worth it, the route went over hills as well again, but it was not bad, since we did not have already this complete hotness.
We arrived Poggibonsi around Midday, after driving up one hill and pushing up another, where we had a break after a visit of the supermarket. I wanted to get up to San Gimignano, since it seemed like an amazing city. The only problem was, it has been after 1 already, which basically meant, every intelligent being stays inside somewhere with air conditioning, and only idiots would be outside, and complete idiots would drive up a hill with their bicycles and luggage on a road, which almost had no shadows. Needless to say that this has not been one of my brightest ideas.
However, we made it up both alive, even though Moritz had to wait almost an hour at me, pushing up my way.
After a short break at the camping ground close by, we left our bicycles there and walked back to the town. It was indeed very impressive and I guess, I will definitely come back there some time! (Without the bicycle, of course)
I think, I drank around 5 litres of water today… Tell me again, why am I doing a bicycle tour through a southern country, right in the middle of the summer during a heat period? I mean, I never claimed to be intelligent, but why am I so dumb again? (Do not worry, I still enjoy it, but still)
